Lancaster Spirits Company Welcomes Landmark Legal Status For English Whisky

The Lancaster Spirits Company has welcomed a government ruling granting Geographical Indication (GI) status to English whisky, giving distillers across England statutory protection alongside established Scotch and Irish peers.

The ruling by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) legally protects the terms "English Whisky" and "English Whiskey" under the UK Spirit Drinks Geographical Indications Scheme, enforced by HM Revenue and Customs. The decision establishes legal parity across all four UK nations, formalising quality baselines as regional distillers build export capacity for European and North American markets.

For Lancaster Spirits Company (LSCo), based at Lancaster Leisure Park in Lancashire, the framework provides commercial certainty ahead of the planned 2027 launch of its flagship Lancastrian Single Malt.

The business manages its entire grain-to-glass production on a single site, drawing water from the local Bowland Well aquifer, using on-site solar power, and running slow fermentation cycles to differentiate its spirit from conventional bulk whiskies.

Chris Pateman, Commercial Manager, The Lancaster Spirits Company said: "A GI for the protection of English Whisky is paramount as the English Whisky sector continues to grow. A legal definition will ensure that everybody meets the same quality standards within a legal framework, but equally, giving credibility to an exciting, emerging category. Providing consumers, at home and abroad, a clear guarantee of what they're getting when they see 'English Whisky' on a label, and it puts our category on the same footing as Scotch, Welsh and Irish whisky for the first time.

“As with a lot of things in life, perception and reputation are of utmost importance. Our focus, as with the majority of the English distillers, is to produce single malt with a real sense of place. Focused upon crafting flavour-forward whisky that is produced authentically in small batches but still allowing innovation to flourish. The GI will help to solidify this reputation and help English single malt whisky continue its exponential growth. It's a strong platform for us to keep building on as our own single malt comes to market in 2027.’’

The GI framework is the culmination of a six-year campaign spearheaded by the English Whisky Guild (EWG), which submitted its formal application to DEFRA in February 2022 before receiving official approval on 11 September 2026.

Unlike traditional Scotch whisky regulations, the new English legal specification offers commercial and operational flexibility suited to craft operators:

Grain sourcing: All cereal grain must be 100 per cent grown in the UK, alongside English mashing water.

Distillation standards: Distillation must occur in England from English-made wort, coming off the still at under 94.8 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV).

Cask variation: Spirits must mature in England for at least three years in wooden casks of up to 700 litres, but distillers may use non-oak woods provided it is declared on the label.

Brewery tie-ups: Producers may partner with local independent breweries for mashing and fermentation stages.

Logistics flexibility: Cured whisky can be shipped in bulk inert containers for bottling abroad, reducing distribution freight costs.

The domestic category has expanded from 46 distilleries laying down stock at the end of 2023 to more than 70 today, with upwards of 40 already exporting to 32 countries.

LSCo, which also produces craft gin and vodka, is currently offering private cask allocations and early access to its inaugural 2027 single malt through its Founders' Reserve Whisky Club and Cask Collective schemes.
