Leeds Retailer Abu Bakr Launches Asian Wedding Catering Service
Abu Bakr Supermarket, a family-run grocery chain based in Leeds, has expanded its prepared food division into wedding catering across Yorkshire.
The West Yorkshire retailer, which operates stores in Leeds and the neighbouring town of Batley, has launched Abu Bakr Food 2 Go Wedding Catering. The service provides large-scale catering for South Asian and Islamic wedding occasions, including nikahs (marriage ceremonies), mehndis (henna celebrations), and walimas (wedding banquets), as well as engagements and broader family events.
The expansion targets growing demand across Yorkshire’s significant South Asian communities in Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, and Huddersfield, as well as the wider North of England. The retailer is scaling up its existing in-store takeaway brand, Food 2 Go, into a full-scale event catering service.
Menus will offer halal-certified South Asian cuisine alongside vegetarian and vegan selections. The options range from starters, curries, and rice dishes to grilled items and desserts, with logistical arrangements covering customer collection, direct delivery, and full-service event setup.
Hamza Hussain, Managing Director of Abu Bakr Supermarket, said: "Food is at the heart of every celebration in our community, especially weddings, and we've had so many customers asking if we could cater for their special day.
"Food 2 Go has become a brand people know and trust for fresh, quality food, so launching a dedicated wedding catering service felt like the natural next step.
"Whether it's a nikah, mehndi, walima or a wedding reception with hundreds of guests, we want to help families celebrate with delicious food and excellent service."
The launch marks an ongoing shift among independent grocers in northern England seeking to diversify revenues by converting established hot-food retail counters into standalone event-catering operations.
