Lisa Stansfield - A Northern Soul Returns
Had it not been for the success of the Coldcut hit, People Hold On, Lisa Stansfield might have never released her debut album
Affection.
The album is still her most successful album to date. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the album the singer is now on a European tour which naturally called into Manchester, the place where it all started.
In 1989 Adele wasn't even born nor Amy Winehouse and CD's were the preferred format for listening to music. In a soulful way Stansfield paved the way for these artists and many others since who have been influenced by her.
Backed by a strong band rather than sing the tracks off the album in sequence she decides to mix things up. Hearing the songs now they still sound fresh -
Mighty Love and
Sincerity could have easily come off her last album.
The audience were soon up on their feet for
This Is The Right Time where her soulful vocals were in full effect - it is still hard to believe that such a strong voice comes from her tiny frame.
Poison and
Wake Up Baby might not be remembered from the album, but it was still good to hear the tracks. Naturally as her global Number 1 track
All Around The World is played the sold out audience are back up on their feet. They take over singing the chorus of the song as Stansfield looks on as if it was probably the best northern homecoming she has had.
With the album being performed in its entirety there was little time left for her other hits.
Someday (I'm Coming Back) and
All Woman had to be sacrificed in favour of
The Real Thing and
What Did I Do To You?
"It's a crazy world we are living in now, especially in this country" she declares as she introduces
Live Together.
She might be going nearly all around the world on this tour but you cannot take away the strong northern spirit and love Stansfield and her fans showed during the concert- Total affection from all concerned.
