The name Bobbie Dazzle is one that is unfamiliar – after witnessing her influential performance at the City Varieties in Leeds as a support act on the current Luke Morley tour, she deserved to become a household name.

Admitting to herself that her influences come from her dad’s record collection, her inspiration is old-school glam rock; however, there was no doubting how, with charm, presence and talent, she took the Leeds audience back to the good old days of Sweet, Suzi Quatro and Alice Cooper mixed with a dose of progressive rock from the likes of Focus and Rush.

Revolution!!! came wrapped around a Burundi-style beat with a hook as sharp as barbed wire, whilst Merry Go Round had the flute of Jethro Tull with the melody of a latter-day Yes track. On a rainy autumnal night in Leeds, Bobbie dazzled.

The last time Luke Morley played in Leeds, over ten thousand fans greeted him and the rest of the rock band Thunder at the Arena. Tonight’s audience is a far more modest gathering, as Morley, backed by a proficient band including Chris Childs, the Thunder bass player, led the audience through Morley’s recent solo album, Walking on Water. The album mixes blues and melody, resulting in a kaleidoscope of classic rock.

Anyone expecting more than a couple of Thunder tracks would not have been disappointed, as Morley’s solo work holds up on its own. The two Thunder tracks he did gift to the fans, Like a Satellite and River of Pain, worked well – the latter though missed the emotional vocal of Danny Bowes, the original singer of the track, as Morley’s vocals were more gravelly rather than soulful.

The powerful ballad Breathe would not sound out of place on Radio 2, whilst Natural High proved that Morley can still write a memorable song that mixes his influences with a modern sound. Whipping up a storm with closing number Go with the Flow, Morley and his band had given a thunderous performance on a night of superb musicianship.
