Ahead of National Walking Day on Wednesday 2nd April, cancer charity Walk the Walk is highlighting the huge benefits of walking for mental health.
A recent survey** of 2,000 adults, conducted for Walk the Walk, showed that 71 per cent believe that spending time on self-care would improve their productivity.
Going for a walk and being active has a positive impact on their mood and mental health for 82 per cent of those questioned.
Walk the Walk’s Founder and Chief Executive Nina Barough CBE has created five tips for making walking a habit.
Let walking help your mental health in five easy steps!
1. Put a walk in your diary!
Pick a time of day which suits you best – make daily lunchtime walking a habit
2. Plan several walking routes for different distances and times
You’ll always know where you are going, how far and for how long
3. Have suitable comfortable clothing and shoes for any weather
Some of the worst weather days can deliver the best walks
4. Invest in a tracking device or app
Tracking all your walking each day can be really motivating
5. Every step counts!
Engage your core – even when walking to the kettle!
