Only follow life advice if it resonates with how you want to live yours.
There’s a reason 40 plus blogger Claire Kenny wrote this week’s column on an exercise bike.
One of the most amazing things about freelancing is a complete lack of unproductive guilt about where, when and how (logistically) you work.
Some people will urge you to compartmentalise your work and personal life, but with the exception of cleaning and other mundane stuff, I love it all. Which is probably why my life is a wonderful blob of everything rolled into one.
I know this goes against the grain, but it’s why I was able to celebrate Mother's Day during the working week on the East Coast where my parents now live. I’m always puzzled why Old Town Bridlington doesn’t get more fanfare – it has bags of charm, genuinely interesting independent shops, and the most wonderful food and drink options at the pubs and eateries that pepper the main street. The Georgian Tearooms deserves a special mention – their afternoon tea was one of the best I’ve had, with soft crustless sandwiches, savoury pastries, and sweet treats we couldn’t finish because they were so generous! The staff were also attentive, friendly and particularly caring towards the older regulars, who clearly visit because they get a listening ear and a warm welcome.
Back to my original point about work/life balance though. I’m writing this article on an exercise bike at 7pm and worked for some of the weekend, but that suits me. So no matter how well-meaning life advice is, you should only follow it if it truly resonates with how you want to live yours. And if you want to include the scenic walks and quality time with your family in traditional office hours, it’s hugely liberating to realise that you can absolutely work in the way that you want if you’re a solo business owner.

Jewellery making at Pink Vintage
I was excited to accept an invitation to Pink Vintage jewellery over the weekend to enjoy a permanent jewellery-making workshop. After enjoying breakfast right next to the glorious Minster, we were welcomed by owner Nikki to her gorgeous new studio.
It's simple:
Choose your preferred colour - gold or silver
Choose your style - I chose a really fine gold with tiny little studs, and my daughter chose a thicker silver
Choose a charm - luckily Nikki and I follow each other on Insta so she knows I'm all about the angel numbers. She'd picked out a beautiful gold 444 for me and I loved it.

Nikki then uses her skills to pull everything together and ensure a great fit. Think of it as micro welding!
After a chat, a hug and a pretty pink cupcake we were ready to hit the shops. The studio is right in the heart of York's shopping district, two minutes from Brown's and M&S. We called for lunch at Fenwick’s and enjoyed some of the sights before heading back to our car via the ever-efficient Rawcliffe Park and Ride.
If you're looking to do something different you can fit into your day and come away with a warm glow and something beautiful, I can't recommend this enough!
