Tomorrow will see the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games officially commence, with athletes from nearly 100 countries competing across the 19 days of action.

Over 200 gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded across 16 different disciplines, with Team GB competing in 11 of those disciplines.

Overview of the 2026 Winter Olympic games

The games will see history be made on the first day of competition, as for the first time in the history of the Olympics, the Winter Olympic Games will be hosted by two different cities, Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

The games in Italy will see 245 Olympic titles awarded, with the same number of silver and bronze medals also available across 116 different medal events.

Almost 3,000 athletes will compete in the 26th edition of the Winter Olympics, as Italy will host the Winter Olympics for the third time after previously hosting the event in 1956 (Cortina d'Ampezzo) and 2006 (Turin).

What will Team GB look like at the upcoming games?

Team GB are taking a delegation of 53 athletes to compete across 11 disciplines throughout the 19 days of competition at the Milano Cortina games.

Women will make up around 43% of Team GB’s delegation; there will be 23 women and 30 men competing for Team GB, with women also making up 47% of all athletes taking part in the most gender-equal Winter Olympics games ever.

Team GB are taking some history-makers to the Milano Cortina games, with Adele Nicoll set to make history as the first female British athlete to compete in the monobob at the Olympics.

What to expect from Team GB at Milano Cortina

Since the last Winter Olympics (Beijing 2022), British athletes have become World Champions on 10 different occasions, with Curling (Team Mouat) and Skeleton (Matt Weston) athletes becoming World Champions just last year.

Great Britain will be looking to improve on their best-ever medal haul of 5, which was achieved at both the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics.

UK Sport believes that Team GB could win between 4 and 8 medals at the games, with the athletes expected to bring home more than Great Britain’s 2022 Beijing medal haul, which was 1 gold and 1 silver, both of which came in curling.

How the games will take place.

The opening ceremony will take place at the San Siro Stadium in Milan on Friday, 6th February, with the first medals being awarded on the official 1st day of competition, Saturday, 7th February.

Medals will be awarded every day afterwards until the final day of competition, which will take place on Sunday 22nd February, as the men’s ice hockey will be the final medals awarded in the history-making games.
