Still Preaching The Good News 40 Years On – The Proclaimers

Still walking after almost 40 years of rocking: The Proclaimers aka Craig & Charlie Reid.
The timbers creaked and the floors groaned after The Proclaimers, aka identical twins Craig and Charlie Reid, exited Bradford St George’s Hall last night, sure in the knowledge that they had rocked another building to its foundations!
This bespectacled duo and their four-piece band – all dressed in jeans and a dour array of Scottish shirts – certainly know how to put on a show and, judging from their less than flamboyant image, it’s their way of saying: “We are here to play, not parade ourselves.”
And play they did for 90 unbroken minutes, taking a near-packed house through an array of intrinsically Scottish ballads and rock numbers, all tinged with nostalgia, celtic sounds and more than a hint of north-of-the-border nationalism.
They’ve been on the scene for nigh on 40 years but the format hasn’t changed: one of the twins plays whilst the other, with tambourine in hand and the occasional penny whistle thrown in for good measure, provides lead vocals with his brother harmonising.
Let’s Get Married, Streets of Edinburgh, Cap In Hand, Sundays By John Calvin, Letter from America, Sunshine On Leith and, of course, the ubiquitous I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles): they bashed through the numbers like an out of control steam train.

And, at the end, there wasn’t anyone sitting. Personal dignities had gone out of the window and everyone was on their feet unashamedly dancing and punching the air. Twas a sight to behold!
I remember turning on the TV many years ago and seeing a much younger version of Craig and Charlie on the US Letterman show. It was 1989. They rocked ‘em then and they’ve been rockin’ ever since!
The Proclaimers have a loyal following, that’s for certain, but it would be remiss of me to end this review without mention of their England and Wales support artiste, the wonderful, stunning, nay marvellous John Bramwell.
With guitar in hand and a hard-to-match vocal and musical talent, he held St George’s for 30 minutes. Just wonderful and yes, I even went to his website to see where I could see him again I was that impressed. And what a wit.
This was an evening of rockin’ and rollin’ with some wonderful, calming moments thrown in to boot. You can still catch the show at York and Sheffield.
