Multi-disciplinary professional services firm, Progeny, hosted its second annual summer school programme for 16-to-18 year olds at its Leeds headquarters last week.

Designed to give students an insight into roles within the financial services sector, the programme hosted 13 students, nearly half of whom were young women, up from a quarter who were female in 2022.

Students enjoyed a varied schedule, including sessions on the advice process, paraplanning, investment management, cyber crime and CV and interview coaching. They were also given the opportunity to take part in a mock investment portfolio challenge and to film their own showreel in Progeny’s in-house video studio.

Running from 7th to 11th August, the programme was designed to help inform students’ decisions on a future career and overcome some of the traditional stereotypes that can exist about working in financial services.

Head of Compliance and Policy, Sarika Dhanjal comments:

“After the success of our first summer school last year, Progeny has committed to making this an annual event. Financial services still lacks visibility as a career option for students and I’m so pleased that this year’s programme also attracted more young women, as one of the aims was to showcase our sector as a great place for female talent.

“Once again, we’ve all been greatly impressed by the attitude and ability of the young people who took part and it’s a week from which I feel the team here and the students all gained equally. Two of the attendees have already asked to come back to Progeny for work experience.”

Summer school student, Holly Bestwick, comments:

“Being at Progeny over the last five days has been an amazing and eye-opening opportunity into the world of financial services, as well as learning about Progeny itself. Meeting so many new faces and developing relationships has been the highlight of my week, alongside the stock market challenge and watching our mock funds fluctuate daily, thanks to Sam and Nigel from the Progeny Asset Management team. I learnt that with such a huge variety of jobs and career routes you can take within finance, there are endless opportunities.”

Fellow student, Joshua Wells comments:

“The Progeny Summer School has extended my knowledge of the roles for careers in finance and has also inspired me to look further into finance as a career option.”

Fellow student, Jaiya Sangha, added:

“This summer school has been an amazing opportunity for young people like me to expand their existing knowledge in financial services, whether that’s learning about job titles that you never knew existed or discovering new potential career paths that you never thought of exploring previously.”
