Review: Now Thats What I Call Music 102 (Sony Music/Universal)
A good indication of what is going on in the current music world is the Now compilations. This latest instalment has an incredible 46 tracks spread over 2 CD's with 40 of the biggest tracks of today and 6 bonus tracks that originally featured on Now 2, 35 years ago.
Cynics might say that they have included the 6 bonus tracks as they could not find enough songs from today to fill up the album, but nevertheless the 6 extra tracks take you back to a time when pop was more melodic. Think Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Wouldn't It Be Good by Nick Kershaw, It's A Miracle by Culture Club and Hold Me Now by The Thompson Twins and you will get some idea of what I mean.
Fast forward 35 years to 2019 and you will find tracks such as the Lady GaGa inspired Sweet But Psycho from Ava Max, Talk by Khalid and the Number 1 hit from Lewis Capaldi with Someone You Loved, who incidentally is playing 2 shows at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre this summer.
If you want songs that will still be remembered in 35 years time then check out Just You and I from Tom Walker, Pretty Shining People from George Ezra and Lost Without You from Freya Ridings.
It's not just the new upstarts on the compilation, as the old guard are represented too with Rod Stewart and Look In Her Eyes. There are a couple of tracks too from the Greatest Showman soundtrack namely This Is Me from Keala Settle and the version of Rewrite The Stars by James Arthur and Anne-Marie.
