Robin Taylor

Inspired by the sounds of hip hop and pop, Robin Taylor blends her inspirations into one concoction that'll get you turning your head; and volume dial up. Robin’s pop/r&b vocals sing stories through catchy pop melodies over hip hop style beats. Having just released her latest single, Beast, we caught up with her to find out what songs make her...

Smile

“Centerfold” by The J. Geils Band
The opening horn melodies, the catchy “na-na-na”s and the conversational descriptive lyrics make me so happy. I love the opening line “does she walk? Does she talk? Does she complete?” and “I was shakin in my shoes, whenever she flashed those baby blues” and “to see her in that negligee is really just too much.”
Man I wish my crush would write a song about how much they crush on me like this!

Contemplate

“Echo” by Vertical Horizon
“No I don’t want to be just another echo” those lyrics hit me so hard because I think a lot of us feel like we get stuck in the hamster wheel of life. I like my unique style and personality, and I like living a life where I’m not restricted to societal norms and standards.

Cry

“The Voice Within” by Christina Aguilera
This song makes me cry because I’ve struggled so much with manic-depression and self-confidence. I decided to stop taking medication and going to therapy because I didn’t want to have to rely on something to feel “normal,” I also didn’t want it to define me.
When I hear this song it reminds me of my internal struggles but also how I’ve been able to deal with them in a healthy way while still living the life I want to live.

Laugh

“Freaky Friday” by Lil Dicky ft.
Chris Brown The concept of Lil Dicky and Chris Brown switching bodies is hilarious! So creative. The melody of the chorus is so catchy, too.

Want to work out

“Apeshit” by The Carters
Ugh I love a hard beat with a boss a$$ melody on top! With this song I’ll be running with no breath breaks and adding 10 pounds to every weight machine I use. My favourite lines are “gimme my check, put some respect on my check, or pay me in equity, pay me in equity, watch me reverse outta debt.”

Reminisce

“Amber” by 311
I remember sitting in my friend’s car in high school over summer breaks, we’d pull over into a neighbourhood park or drive around and smoke while we played this song. The whole vibe of this song is escape everyday life and chill with no worries.

Relax

“Sittin on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding
I grew up going to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire with my family so I love lake life. When I hear this song it reminds me of sitting by the lake, listening to the waves crash against the rocks, and the echoes of the birds in the sky.

Feel Determined

“Lose Yourself” by Eminem
This song is such a confidence booster. Whenever I hear it, all my fears and worries go away and I’m like “yeah I got this!” Whenever I feel like giving up or feel like I’m not good enough, I hear this song and it gives me that extra push to not only keep grinding but grind harder.

Dance

“Dip” by Tyga
I’m not a club girl but when I do go I loooove breaking it down! This song makes me feel good about wanting to shake it!
