York City captain Sean Newton has left the club on loan for Northern Premier League side Buxton, it has been confirmed today. The defender has spent over 5 years with The Minstermen, picking up three clubman of the year awards along the way.

Joining from Wrexham, Newton linked up with the club in October 2016 and his loan deal was made permanent in January 2017.

In his first season, he helped City to an FA Trophy win, as they beat Macclesfield Town 3-2 in the final. Newton also claimed his first clubman of the year award, becoming a fans favourite.

Since that very first season, the goal scoring defender tallied up a total of 188 appearances and grabbed 33 goals, a lot of them coming in spectacular fashion. Some of his most memorable goals included an injury time winner against Barrow and a rocket against Stockport in the FA Cup.

Liverpool-born Newton carried on his brilliant form, collecting another two clubman of the year awards, making him a joint-record holder (3).

Newton will now move to Buxton on loan until the end of the season, reuniting with Jason Gilchrist and Mackenzie Heaney, who also joined from York earlier in the campaign.
