Tom Harvey and the rest of the Sheffield Steelers Premier Division team took home the National League Premier Division title at the 2026 National Championship Finals event in Derby.
The event, which is described as ‘the pinnacle of the British Wheelchair Basketball domestic calendar’, brought together the top teams from across all five leagues to battle it out for the 2026 titles.
On winning the 2026 Premier Division title, Harvey said: “It was just nice to finally win it (the final) and get it over the line and to just win a trophy for the club.”
“It was a really good experience; it was the third final that we’d been in in a row, and we’d lost the previous two, so to finally win it was nice, and it was just good for the whole team.”

Sheffield’s playoff run began on Saturday, 16th May, when they faced the Jaguars, who finished 4th in the league, in the first of the Premier Division semi-finals.
The Steelers defeated the Jaguars, last year’s champions, to secure their place in the final alongside the London Titans, who defeated Manchester Revolution in the second semi-final.
In the semi-final against the Jaguars, Harvey said, "It was good." I think we were quite glad that we got to play them because we haven’t lost to them this season; we lost to second once and to third once, and they were fourth, so I feel like it was a good game for us to have in the semi-final."
The 2026 National Championship Finals event proved to be third time lucky for Harvey and the Sheffield Steelers as they held off the London Titans to become Premier Division champions.
The South Yorkshire side won the game by just four points as they held on despite a strong fightback by the Titans to win the final by 64-60.
On the final, Harvey said: “They (London) won the final two years ago as well, when we first lost, so it was good to play them again. We went ten points up, and then we wobbled, and we just stopped scoring, and then we were down at half-time, so there were a bit of nerves about being down again in another final, but I feel like we were always in control and that we thought we could bring it back and turn it around.”
Heading into the finals event, the Steelers finished top of the league after winning 13 of their 15 league games throughout the 2025/26 season.
The Yorkshire side opened their campaign with an 11-game unbeaten run in which they recorded their highest win of the season, 109-37, against Aces WBC.

On the Steelers’ successes during the 2025/26 season, Harvey said: “It’s been good; we signed a really good player at the start of the season, so many teams were expecting us to go on and win after signing him." So it was just good to go through the season and to finish top of the league and just have a good season.”
Alongside his domestic successes last season, Harvey has also enjoyed success on an international level after helping England secure qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Harvey was part of England’s quartet at the 3x3 Commonwealth Games European Zonal Qualifier who remained undefeated on their way to the men’s final, in which they defeated Wales 21-6 to secure qualification to the Glasgow games.
On what it was like to compete at the European Zonal Qualifier, Harvey said: “I really enjoyed that tournament." Growing up I really wanted to play for England, but it’s something that in wheelchair basketball you don’t really get the chance to do because it’s normally Great Britain at the World Championships, Europeans and the Paralympics, so it was nice to play for England and help them to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.”
England will join hosts Scotland as well as South Africa, Malaysia, Australia and Canada at the Glasgow 2026 games.
At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in England, both the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams will be looking to upgrade their bronze medals from the 2022 Birmingham games, as the sport features in the games’ schedule for only the second time in history.
In the following months and his hopes for the Commonwealth Games, Harvey said: “(Since the qualifiers) I’ve just carried on training because we’ve got trials for the final selection before the Commonwealths, so the team will get reselected, and I’m just hoping to make that team again.”
“I hope to go there and win gold, if I get selected, and I feel like we’ll be teamed to push and to challenge ourselves to do that.”
The Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow between the 23rd of July and the 2nd of August, with the 3x3 wheelchair basketball schedule starting on the 24th of July, with the finals taking place on the 29th of July.
