Timing a beach holiday is never as simple as booking in the summer, is it? Book too early in the season, and you risk disappointing temperatures – but leave it too late, and you're dealing with big crowds, extortionate prices and weather that borders on being too hot. Travel experts from TheTeamTrip, Royal Westmoreland and Ferry Host give us their insights.

The most recent data shows UK residents made 94.6 million trips abroad in 2024 – up 10% from 86.2 million the year before – with holidays accounting for the majority of those journeys. It’s clear the appetite for overseas travel isn't fading any time soon, but with so many destinations competing for attention, knowing when to go is just as important as knowing where.

To help take the guesswork out of it, we spoke to travel experts and destination specialists about the ideal windows to visit five of the most popular beach destinations for Brits – from Spain's sun-baked coasts to the year-round warmth of Barbados – so you can plan around the weather, not against it.

Spain

Spain is one of the most popular travel destinations for Brits, with 17.8 million visitors recorded in 2024. The appeal is obvious – proximity, reliable sunshine and a coastline that stretches from the Atlantic north-west to the Mediterranean south-east. However, for the perfect Spanish holiday, timing matters.

Christian Petzold, travel and tourism expert at TheTeamTrip, recommends targeting the shoulder seasons instead. "The four best months to visit Spain are typically May, June, September and early October. These shoulder-season months provide pleasant, non-sweltering temperatures and relatively less tourist traffic than the extreme heat of July and August. Cities such as Madrid, Seville and Córdoba regularly experience temperatures exceeding 40°C during the height of summer, which can be unbearable for some. I’d recommend late spring and early autumn as ideal times to visit if you're looking to enjoy pleasant weather while avoiding the busiest crowds."

Barbados

Barbados offers something different to other common travel destinations: a reason to travel in winter. January is one of the best months to visit, with the dry season underway, beaches in top form and average temperatures of 21–28°C. The peak season runs from December to April, coinciding with Christmas and New Year – warm, dry and predictably beautiful at a time when much of Europe is grey and cold.

Chris Pitt, Concierge Manager at Royal Westmoreland, provider of luxury homes for sale in Barbados, shares his insight on the best times to visit Barbados for enjoyable temperatures.
"Barbados in January and February is as close to perfect beach weather as you'll find anywhere in the world. The winds keep the temperature comfortable, and the sea is calm and clear on the west coast. It's pleasantly warm without being overwhelming, which is exactly what people want when they're escaping a British winter,” says Chris.

"December is undeniably busy. Christmas and New Year bring a real buzz to the island, and if that's the atmosphere you're after, it's a wonderful time to be here. But for guests who want the same guaranteed sunshine and dry weather with a little more space to breathe, January through to March is the real sweet spot. The beaches are quieter, the restaurants are easier to book, and you still get everything that makes Barbados special.

"What we find is that guests who come for the first time in January or February often come back the following year. Once you've experienced the island in dry season, a lot of people find themselves wondering why they'd go anywhere else."

Greece

Average temperatures climb from 21°C in May to 27°C in June across Athens and the Greek islands, with the sea reaching comfortable swimming temperatures by late June. Peak summer delivers guaranteed sunshine, but July and August bring temperatures exceeding 30°C in southern regions, along with larger crowds and higher prices.

Dinesh Kumar, travel expert and co-founder of Ferry Host, points to June and September as the windows most worth targeting. "For those who want to enjoy the Greek islands without overcrowding, June and September provide the best opportunities. In July and August, the temperatures reach extreme highs, while the beaches of popular islands such as Santorini and Mykonos are overcrowded. In June and September, the Mediterranean Sea is ideal for swimming, and the restaurants operate efficiently, at temperatures averaging between 26°C and 28°C."

September and October also offer more affordable accommodation as the peak season fades – making the shoulder season not just more comfortable, but better value too.

Turkey

Turkey's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts offer some of the most striking beach scenery in the region, however temperatures can get unbearably high in peak summer. In 2025, Turkey recorded a nationwide temperature record of 50.5°C, marking the hottest temperature ever measured in the country.

Dinesh recommends spring or autumn as the best times to travel to Turkey. "Turkey is an expansive country where it pays off to visit during spring, April to May, or autumn, September to October. Summertime is extremely hot around the Aegean and Mediterranean seaboard, and resort costs are much higher. Spring gives visitors beautiful conditions for exploring Istanbul and ancient sites like Ephesus, while autumn ensures pleasantly warm sea temperatures for coastal cruising without the summer tourists."

In autumn, the heat mellows in some areas, such as Antalya, to a comfortable 23–28°C, crowds thin out and prices take a welcome dip — ideal for anyone who wants warm water and clear skies without the peak-season premium.

Thailand

Thailand's weather system is more complex than most, and timing here can make or break a trip. The best time to travel is from November to February, when the weather is dry and sunny across most of the country. The rainy season begins in May and is at its wettest in August and October, when travel can be significantly disrupted. The east and west coasts also run on different schedules, meaning sun can usually be found somewhere year-round.

Dinesh highlights two underrated windows that offer the best of both worlds. "The absolute peak time for Thailand occurs between December and January due to favourable weather conditions; however, costs increase and beaches become crowded. Alternatively, visit in November, just after the monsoon season ends, for sunny skies and fewer crowds. Late February to March is also a great time to visit. It will be warm, around 30°C, beautiful and far less hectic."

For Andaman Sea destinations such as Phuket and Krabi, the dry season runs from November to May, while the Gulf of Thailand islands, including Koh Samui and Koh Tao, are best visited from January to September. Planning your trip whilst keeping these details in mind can make a significant difference to the experience.
