'Then And Now' Project At Skipton Library

A unique project hosted by libraries across North Yorkshire is taking a new look at the past and present of some of the county’s most cherished landmarks.

The 'Then and Now' project was funded by a £5,000 grant by Libraries Connected Yorkshire and Humber. It aims to develop creative and digital skills, as well as encourage a sense of pride and belonging among communities.

Over the last few months, staff and volunteers at Scarborough and Skipton libraries worked with groups and digital artists to choose the locations. Photographs were taken to compare with old images held in the library’s historical photographic collections.

The groups included the Adult Learning and Skills Service, Syrian refugee families in Skipton and the Pupil Referral Unit in Scarborough.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “We’re really pleased with how the project has developed at both Skipton and Scarborough. The sessions in Skipton were delivered in the autumn, and some excellent art work was produced.

“I understand that feedback from the group was extremely positive. They all enjoyed learning about the history of their town and connecting with its past, and gained new skills using the free photo-editing software available on the libraries’ public PCs.”

Exhibitions at both libraries were postponed due to the coronavirus restrictions. However, art work is being shared on the Skipton and Scarborough Facebook pages throughout May to coincide with Local Community and History month.
