Transdev has launched a Level 2 Bus Driver Apprenticeship programme, with the first cohort beginning in January 2026 and applications now open for subsequent intakes.

The scheme, delivered in partnership with training provider Realise, comprises 326 hours of training over eight months. Each apprenticeship is valued at £8,000, funded entirely through Transdev's Apprenticeship Levy.

The programme will operate across nine regional bus companies in Yorkshire and Lancashire, with apprentices trained by in-house instructors before entering service in late 2026.

A notable feature of the new scheme is the integration of Functional Skills throughout the course rather than as standalone examinations. The approach aims to develop apprentices' maths and English abilities while they acquire driving skills.

Data from Realise shows that bus driver apprenticeships attract diverse age groups: of 1,200 learners who have completed the provider's programme, only 19.3% were under 25.

Dale French, Transdev's Training Manager, said: "By investing in this new programme, Transdev are also investing in the communities we serve across the North of England. With more well-trained driver colleagues, we are confident that this new scheme will enhance the quality of the service we provide, leading to more reliable buses for our customers for years to come."

Kairon Flowers, Director of Transport at Realise, added: "Buses are of critical importance to cities, towns and villages, so safeguarding services by developing skills is vital. For individuals, apprenticeships can not only provide a route to a stable, fulfilling new career but can also leave them well placed to earn a promotion in the future."
