York Care Community Transformed By £3.2m Refurbishment
A refurbishment project at Glen Lodge, an independent care community with extra care in Heworth, York, has been completed by Yorkshire and Lincolnshire construction firm Hobson & Porter.
The £3.2m, 15-month programme has transformed the older part of the property, which was originally built in the 1970s and consists of 32 assisted living apartments for older people. Working on behalf of City of York Council, Hobson & Porter has delivered a complete modernisation programme, making the scheme more accessible, energy efficient and comfortable for residents.
The comprehensive refurbishment included the installation of new kitchens and en suite bathrooms in every apartment, along with fully redecorated bedrooms and lounges. Essential infrastructure upgrades were also completed, including a full rewire, new plumbing systems, and the installation of a new roof. Outside, residents can now enjoy improved landscaped gardens with new pathways and seating areas.
Throughout the project, an average of 25 to 30 tradespeople were on site each day, working methodically across the building to ensure minimal disruption for residents and staff.
Senior site manager Dave McCorrie from Hobson & Porter said: “Glen Lodge needed a complete refurbishment to bring it in line with modern standards, and we are delighted to have delivered a project that will significantly improve the comfort and quality of life for its residents. As well as vital structural and mechanical works, we’ve created bright, accessible spaces that residents can really feel at home in.”
Residents have praised the improvements commenting on how they have made a big difference to their sense of community – particularly the garden paths and seating areas, which are a great place for neighbours to get together.
Tom Frank, a resident of Glen Lodge for the past two years said: “My family said to move here, they’d come and visit, and that I’d be happy, and I am. It’s nice, comfortable and everybody’s sociable. I have friends here now and I’ve got help if I need it. You can’t go wrong here.”
Dave added: “We’re proud to have played a role in securing the future of Glen Lodge for the next generation of residents. This project demonstrates the positive impact investment in housing and care can have, not just on individuals, but on the wider community.”
The project forms part of Hobson & Porter’s strong portfolio in the health and care sector, where the firm has developed a reputation for successfully delivering complex refurbishments and new-build schemes. In recent years, the company has completed the award-winning extra care development, Marjorie Waite Court in Clifton, as well as the new £10m, 63-bedroom Haxby Hall care home for Yorkare. Work is also well underway on Lime Trees, a £6m care home in Clifton, set to open in 2026.
