A partnership between the University of York and insurance firm Aviva has marked a successful year at The Place, a community hub in the Westfield area of York.
Launched in 2023, the hub provides support and educational opportunities in Westfield, an area ranked among the 20 per cent most deprived neighbourhoods in England. The initiative has recorded more than 5,000 interactions with young people and worked directly with over 1,100 children since its opening.
As a primary partner for skills and employability, Aviva has committed a five-year funding and support package to the centre. Nearly 80 employees have volunteered their time, hosting approximately 300 Year 7 and 8 pupils from nearby York High School for workplace visits and skills sessions focused on communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Holly Hennell, Community Impact Manager at Aviva, said: "Aviva is proud to be a skills and work partner for The Place - a fantastic example of what can happen when organisations come together around a shared ambition to improve opportunities for young people. We’ve seen first-hand the difference it is making for children, young people and families in Westfield, creating a safe and welcoming space where people can learn and access support.
“Our colleagues have volunteered their time, and expertise, helping to create opportunities that encourage young people to think about their futures, build confidence and develop new skills. We're excited to continue working with our partners to help even more young people get ready for brighter futures."
Jo Young, The Place Centre Manager, said: "The Place was established to ensure that children and young people in Westfield have access to the opportunities, support and encouragement they need to fulfil their potential. Over the past year we have seen remarkable engagement from local young people and families. We are incredibly grateful for our community partners and the shared commitment to improving outcomes for future generations."
The hub is supported by the University of York, Aviva, local schools, and community organisations. A schedule of free events and activities is planned throughout the summer. Find out more on the
