York Residents Invited To Celebrate Community Connections At Free Summer Sparkle Event
Residents across York are invited to kick off the summer in style at Summer Sparkle 2026 – a free community celebration taking place on Thursday 4 June as part of the York Festival of Ideas.
Hosted by local charity York Cares and Hiscox Insurance, the event will bring together people from across the city for an evening of music, conversation, creativity and fun.
The annual event is part of York Cares’ Social Connections programme, which was launched in response to increasing loneliness and isolation following the Covid-19 pandemic. The programme brings together younger and older residents from across York to forge new friendships, strengthen community ties and encourage meaningful social interaction.
Summer Sparkle is aimed at younger neighbours aged 18 and over and older neighbours aged 65 and over - but York Cares is encouraging anyone over 18 to come along and join the celebration.
This year’s event will also feature hands-on craft activities led by York-based charity Dandelion Arts UK, alongside a fun photo wall complete with polaroid cameras and scenic summer backdrops to take photos in front of.
Leanne Shaw from York Cares said: “Evidence has shown that 36% of people in the UK feel lonelier since the pandemic. More than 50% want to feel more connected to their local community and 73% now recognise that a sense of community is important for wellbeing.
"Opportunities such as the Summer Sparkle provide a chance for neighbours in York to share time, laughter, and new experiences together. We aim to give local people a sense of belonging and improved wellbeing."
"Summer Sparkle is possible thanks to the amazing support of our partners and local York businesses. We're especially grateful to Hiscox for their continued support hosting the celebration, our dedicated volunteers and the Woodroffe Benton Foundation, whose generous support has helped provide catering for the evening.”
Summer Sparkle 2026 is taking place at the Hiscox Building in York city centre on Thursday 4 June from 5.30pm to 7pm. Tickets are free and available from https://yorkfestivalofideas.com/2026/calendar/summer-sparkle/
