With snow and ice on the ground and further snowstorms predicted for the coming days, Yorkshire Water is urging customers to act now to protect their homes and properties as the cold snap of wintery weather takes hold.

The utility is also urging customers to report any leaks spotted in public areas via the Yorkshire Water website.

Insulating exposed pipes especially in unheated areas like attics, basements, garages, and external walls, is one of the most effective ways to prevent them from freezing. Lagging pipes with insulation helps to maintain warmth and reduces the risk of cracks and bursts when temperatures drop, often leading to costly repairs and water supply disruptions.

The cold snap will also increase ground movement, which can lead to an increase in leaks from Yorkshire Water’s network of underground water mains. Customers who spot leaks can report them via the Yorkshire Water website.

Joe Hands, head of water distribution at Yorkshire Water said: “Cold weather can lead to an increase in leaks and bursts, both private properties and on our underground network that transports water across the region.

"It is important people check pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks, and water meters in unheated areas that might be exposed to the cold. There’s lots of tips on our website that customers can follow on how to get their homes winter ready and protect them from unexpected bursts.

“Reporting any leaks on pavements and roads ensures we can visit and inspect the area quickly and fix any Yorkshire Water problems as soon as possible. This can be done by visiting the report a leak section of our website.”
