Top 10 Artists To Add To Your Playlist in 2013

10 Top Ideas To Add To Your Playlist in 2013
10 Top Ideas To Add To Your Playlist in 2013
2012 proved an eventful year in music, so it is with great excitement that we look ahead to 2013. While the eighties synth-heavy sounds may have dominated the early teenies, a fully fledged nineties revival is just around the corner, according to some. The rise and rise of the solo vocalist - the musician and songwriter - has also been particularly noteworthy, but can this trend continue?

As 2012 closes, The Yorkshire Times has decided to buck the trend of simply predicting those acts that the industry believe will do well, and instead offer up 10 artists that we hope will make your playlist in 2013...

10. The Struts

This Derbyshire quartet have been hailed as the new Primal Scream meets Kasabian, and there's no doubting their distinct brand of rock will get those booties shaking. With a debut album due in 2013, these lads are set to place Derby firmly at the top of the musical map.

9. Seven Tors

Sassy trio Seven Tors play heavily on harmony, and their distinct sound has caused frantic shoulder dancing on the Yorkshire and Lancashire live scene. With the three girls working hard on their debut EP, we have a feeling that they could well have the critics cooing by mid 2013.

8. Kid Conventional

Regularly compared to Ed Sheeran and James Arthur, Sheffield-based Brummie troubadour Kid Conventional may have debuted his sensational side project The Whittlers during 2012, but his to date under-appreciated musings are a must-have addition to your music collection.

7. Meghann Clancy

North Yorkshire lass Meghann Clancy may have relocated to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but the songbird does her home country proud on her brand-new debut album 'Take Flight'. Andrea Corr meets Tori Amos, Clancy's musical musings are touching, tantalising and uplifting.

6. Nabiha

Danish songstress Nabiha has already clocked up five Top 10 hits and a Gold album in her home country. With international success in her grasp, Nabiha launches her quest for British success with the Womack & Womack 'Teardrops' sampling 'Never Played The Bass'. Infectiously summery, Nabiha is about to make the winter a whole lot warmer.

5. Chvrches

Scottish electro-pop trio Chvrches blow their listeners away with the frenetic energy, their heartfelt lyrics and hypnotic beats. On recent single 'The Mother We Share', they demonstrated the ability to invoke both tears and dancing in one effortless swoop.

4. Young Peculiar

Young Peculiar are a firm favourite of The Yorkshire Times, and their eponymous debut EP has become a regular feature on our stereo system. Having topped our EP chart of 2012, Young Peculiar are an act who also command attention on the live circuit. With a bevy of amusing covers, and a bravely honest approach to lyrics, Young Peculiar deserve to be bigger than sliced bread.

3. Kites

London trio Kites spent 2012 supporting an array of respected artists - from Emmy The Great to Jarvis Cocker - playing each support slot with vigour, and winning over an army of fans with each performance. Having polled second on our Singles of 2012 countdown with 'This Jumped-Up Boy In Livery', here at The Yorkshire Times, we would not be surprised if Kites are one of the biggest names in UK music by the turn of 2014.

2. Puzzles

Sheffield University has proved the feeding ground for many a musical icon. Synth-heavy quintet Puzzles could easily be the University's next big thing. Having become the go-to support band for everyone stopping in Sheffield, the quintet unveiled their striking debut music video 'Escape Music' in 2012, and with an EP set to drop in 2013, we predict very big things for these bold boys.

1. Charlotte Church

Having been written off by the music industry as a child-star has-been, former Opera wunderkind Charlotte Church returned in 2012 with the first in a series of five EPs. Entitled 'ONE', it displayed a flair for the ethereal and a passion for the artistic. No longer a tabloid star, Church is set to shine as an artist in control of her own career. Latest single 'Glitterbombed' offers insight into 'TWO', and having already garnered comparisons to Kate Bush, Florence and the Machine and Bjork, there is little doubt that this one-time media star is set to dominate as creative chameleon.
