Another New Model From BYD – Seal U DM-i On Test

The BYD Seal U DM-i is a new entrant in the UK's plug-in hybrid SUV market, offering an interesting package of practicality, technology, and efficiency. This D-segment SUV from the Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams) aims to compete with established players by providing a cost-effective alternative with a focus on comfort and features.

Powertrain and Performance

The Seal U DM-i comes in two main configurations. The entry-level model features a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 217PS. The higher-spec 'Design' variant adds a turbocharger to the petrol engine and an additional electric motor on the rear axle, resulting in all-wheel drive and a significant power boost to 323PS.

Performance is respectable, with my entry level ‘Boost’ test car capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 8.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 105mph.
The plug-in hybrid system offers an electric-only range of up to 50 miles, which is competitive for its class. Expect around 45-50mpg in everyday driving, once the battery has been depleted.

With a combined range of over 600 miles, the Seal U DM-i promises to be a versatile long-distance cruiser. Charging capabilities are decent, with the 18.3kWh battery able to charge from 30% to 80% in just 35 minutes using the standard 18kW DC charging option.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Seal U DM-i impresses with a premium-feel cabin that belies its competitive pricing. The interior is spacious and well-appointed, featuring vegan leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel as standard. A large panoramic sunroof adds to the airy feel of the cabin.

The centrepiece of the interior is a 15.6-inch rotatable central infotainment screen, which is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This is complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display, ensuring that information is always readily available to the driver.

BYD has equipped the Seal U DM-i with an array of advanced features, including dual wireless phone-charging pads, a responsive voice control system, and a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Practicality and Space

The Seal U DM-i offers good practicality for families and fleet drivers alike. The boot space is 425 litres, expanding to 1,440 litres with the 40/60-split rear seats folded flat.
While this is slightly smaller than some rivals, it should be adequate for most users' needs. Rear passenger space is generous, with a fully flat floor increasing legroom.
The interior also features clever storage solutions, including a double-layer storage system in the front cabin.

Driving Experience

The driving experience of the Seal U DM-i is a mixed bag. On the positive side, the powertrain is smooth and refined, providing quiet and effortless progress in most situations. The soft suspension setup prioritizes comfort, making it well-suited for urban environments and motorway cruising.

However, the Seal U DM-i's dynamic abilities leave something to be desired. The overly soft suspension leads to excessive body roll and a lack of control on undulating roads. The steering, while light and easy in town, lacks precision and feedback at higher speeds, which can be unsettling on country roads.

Design and Build Quality

Externally, the Seal U DM-i's design is somewhat conservative and may not turn heads, but it's inoffensive and likely to appeal to a broad audience. The build quality appears to be good, with attention paid to material choices and fit and finish.

Value and Equipment

One of the Seal U DM-i's strongest selling points is its value proposition. It undercuts many similarly sized alternatives on price while offering a generous standard equipment list.

All versions come with 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, the aforementioned infotainment system, and a host of comfort and safety features.

Prices start at just £33,205, as tested, rising to £39,905 for the top model.

Conclusion

The BYD Seal U DM-i represents a strong first effort in the plug-in hybrid SUV segment from the Chinese manufacturer. It offers an attractive combination of space, technology, and efficiency at a competitive price point. The high-quality interior, impressive electric range, and comprehensive standard equipment list are particular highlights.

However, the Seal U DM-i is not without its flaws. The plain exterior design, compromised driving dynamics, and smaller-than-average boot space may deter some potential buyers. The soft suspension setup, while comfortable in some situations, may not suit those who prefer a more engaging driving experience.

For buyers prioritizing comfort, technology, and value in their family SUV, the BYD Seal U DM-i presents a compelling option. It's a car that excels in urban environments and on long motorway journeys, where its refined powertrain and comfortable interior can be fully appreciated.

As BYD continues to establish itself in the UK market, the Seal U DM-i serves as a strong foundation. With some refinements to the driving dynamics and perhaps a touch more flair in the design department, future iterations could well challenge the established players in this competitive segment.
