As we transition from August and summer to September, the intensity of action remains high. Instead, things are only getting more exciting for sports across the region as some sides look to ignite their season's beginning, while others reach what could be the apex.

Monday, 31st August: Enterprise National League: Harrogate Town v Gateshead FC 15:00

Harrogate Town must secure a victory against struggling Gateshead to rectify the mistakes from their recent loss in the National League and to maintain their aspirations for an immediate return to the Football League.

They began the season with a strong performance, defeating Solihull Moors 5-2 at the Exercise Stadium on opening day. They quickly followed that with another big victory, travelling to London and securing a 3-1 away win over Wealdstone.

Three consecutive wins were halted by struggling Barrow, who held them to a 2-2 draw, and Town's first loss last weekend to Aldershot Town ruined their unbeaten record.

After two matches, Harrogate has seven points, placing them in seventh and occupying the last playoff spot, where the upcoming visit of Gateshead could prove fruitful for a side aiming to rise further up the table.

The Tynesiders are struggling under Sunderland legend Lee Cattermole, having only picked up a single win over Woking in round two.

Every other match has ended in defeat for the north east residents, as they have had to face off with two sides performing well in Yeovil who battered them 3-0 and most notably top of the league Sutton who handed Gateshead a 1-0 home loss.

Despite the loss, Gateshead can take positives from their solid performance against the league leaders; however, they must replicate this level of play as they travel to North Yorkshire, where they need points to move away from 20th place and avoid a troubling early flirtation with relegation.

Tuesday 1st September Skybet Championship: Sheffield United v Bolton Wanderers 19:45

Sheffield United, under the longtime club servant Chris Wilder, desperately needs a win against Bolton at Bramall Lane to kickstart their season after a slow start.

The Blades have not yet secured a victory in the early stages of this campaign, as their two 0-0 draws against Birmingham and Swansea were finally followed by the excitement of goals in another stalemate, drawing 2-2 against Cardiff away from home.

The match in the Welsh capital was characterized by two contrasting halves: United conceded a goal just two minutes in, but then quickly took a goal just two minutes in, only to quickly regain the lead at 2-1 a goal just two minutes in but then quickly take a 2-1 lead five minutes later, thanks to a penalty from Tom Cannon and a strike from Callum O’Hare.

Shortly before half-time, the scores were level again as Ashford fired home for Cardiff, ending the half and ultimately the game in a draw.

They do have the chance to correct their mistakes, though, as they are only two points away from the playoffs, and a win against Bolton is needed to boost their confidence.

Newly promoted Wanderers have got off to a positive start to their return to the second tier, with an opening day win against Lancashire rivals Preston being the highlight of a still slightly inconsistent start.

That win. After that win, they drew 0-0 against QPR, then narrowly lost 1-0 to QPR in a subsequent match, followed by another narrow 1-0 loss at home to fellow promoted side Lincoln. That disappointing result may have tempered excitement, but Bolton are one point outside the playoff places and are hoping for another confidence boost in South Yorkshire, where they aim to either secure a draw against the Blades or come away with three points; either outcome would significantly enhance their chances of avoiding relegation.

Thursday 3rd September Betfred Super League: Bradford Bulls v Castleford Tigers 20:00

Both Castleford and Bradford enter their penultimate game of the 2026 season looking for a morale boost after a season of struggles in West Yorkshire.

The last Super League match of the year at Odsal features a bottom-of-the-table Bulls side hoping to move off the foot of the table, as their return to the top flight has been marked by struggles to make an impact.

With just six wins all year, the Bulls have the lowest record in the league, and many fans are seeking small moments of joy amidst the excitement of returning to the top flight. Since the beginning of June, they have only won twice, leading to a dismal end-of-season streak in which they have lost 11 out of their last 13 matches.

There have been high points along the way, though, most notably back-to-back wins over both French sides, Toulouse and Catalans, as well as a win over Hull FC in a match that was reminiscent of Super League seasons gone by.

They will be hoping to end the season on a high note as they host a Tigers side that is also experiencing a rough season and struggling to find consistency.

The Tigers sit in tenth on 16 points and have been anything but reliable in 2026, with flashes of brilliance being undercut by moments of embarrassment and bewilderment.

While statement wins over Leeds, Wigan, and St Helens should have been season-defining, they were merely high points in a campaign that also saw them suffer crushing defeats of 72-6 to Warrington, 44-0 to Hull KR, and 48-6 to bitter rivals Wakefield Trinity.

Recently, a win over Hull Fc has been the only bright spark in a run that has seen them lose five of their last six as their centenary day celebrations were put to halt by a 34-6 home drubbing to Catalans Dragons.

In addition to the on-field issues, there has been further turmoil off the pitch, as Aussie head coach Ryan Carr was initially placed on a two-week suspension and then resigned from his position due to personal reasons in late August.

The Tigers will be hoping to end the season on a positive note with a victory, as they once again look to rebuild heading into 2027 with ambitions for improvement both on and off the pitch.

Friday 4th September Betfred Super League: Hull KR v Huddersfield Giants 20:00

We round the week off with another Super League Yorkshire derby as Hull KR host the Giants at Craven Park looking to cement their place in the playoffs.

The Robins remain in the final playoff spot, two points ahead of St Helens with two matches remaining despite a run of form that could have so easily seen them overtaken.

Last year's quadruple winners have had a disappointing defense of their title and have done everything possible to be usurped as quadruple winners. Those losses include a narrow 28-34 defeat at home to Warrington, but it is difficult to determine which was more damaging: another home loss to league newcomers Toulouse or a devastating 46-0 defeat to the Wigan Warriors.

Despite their terrible recent record, they were saved at the weekend because Saints were unable to earn any points at home against league leaders Leeds Rhinos.

This situation means they have a chance to continue competing and are optimistic about improving against a Huddersfield Giants team that, until recently, seemed destined to finish at the bottom.

The wind has changed significantly for Huddersfield, who were previously on track to be one of the worst teams in recent memory, having achieved just two league wins between the start of the season and mid-July—only two victories in 20 matches.

Since the end of July, however, Huddersfield has looked like a transformed team, winning five of their last six matches and finally climbing out of last place.

With both sides looking to end the year on a high, it could be a harder game than KR was anticipating as they come into the match in the poorer form of the two.

If the Giants pick up a result, it could help give their fans a good 2026 send-off and, if the Saints beat the Leigh Leopards, knock Hull out of the playoffs, giving Huddersfield fans more reason to rejoice after a damning campaign for 90% of the season.
