Eurovision: Chatting To The Entrants - The Busker

Maltese trio The Busker are two studio albums and an EP into their recording career. Hardly a new name on their local scene, they were still seen by many as surprise winners of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

With the funky pop vibe of their entry, Dance (Our Own Party), proving popular with audiences on the pre-Eurovision party circuit, their profile ahead of Liverpool is rapidly on the rise. We caught up with them to see how they were feeling ahead of the big contest...

Hi, first and foremost, how are you?

Hello! All great at the moment! We just landed in Madrid for our next pre-party and we are so looking forward to it!

What an exciting 2023 so far... You must be thrilled with how it's playing out. What's been the highlight?

The highlight so far has been meeting the fans and other participants, and performing at new venues! The energy has been amazing which makes us want to work even harder for our performance in Liverpool.

We absolutely love Dance (Our Own Party). Tell us a little about the process behind the scenes in creating the song?

Dance(Our own party) is a funky tune mixed with The Busker’s signature sound. The storyline is a trip of someone triggered by social anxiety at a party, finding comfort in leaving with a couple of friends to go to a familiar and more comforting setting.

Since COVID hit, the three of us have felt more comfortable in our own environment surrounded by people that we are closer with. The song in general is a journey of how one gets out of such a party, and heads back to their home with their friends to throw their own intimate party.

Did you always intend the song for Eurovision?

We believe that the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is definitely the biggest platform for music in Malta. Given that it attracts so many viewers, we saw it as an amazing opportunity to promote our song. We have been able to reach a new demographic, both locally and internationally, which is very exciting for us to continue to showcase our art to a wider audience. All three of us are super ambitious and passionate about our music, and we are excited to enjoy this unique experience in representing Malta, and for any future opportunities that might come out of this.

When you entered Malta Eurovision Song Contest did you expect the response you received?

Not at all! We were quite surprised with the response, but we always worked hard as a band, and getting such good feedback has been very rewarding for us.

Have you always been a big fan of Eurovision?

From a very young age, it was a family tradition for all of us. We used to invite family and friends over, our parents would prepare a delicious meal and then we used to spend the whole night commenting on which performances we have enjoyed, and obviously once Malta's entry is on, the room would be dead quiet, followed by the excitement of seeing the results at the end of the night!

Who is your favourite Eurovision entry of all time?

Sean - Daði og Gagnamagnið - Think About Things
Dav.Jr - Duncan Lawrence - Arcade
Jean Paul - Måneskin - Zitti e Buoni

Who do you feel is your stiffest competition?

Probably ourselves! We are very hard to please and our own worst enemies. We try to challenge every step we take and if something is not feeling right we keep on working until the three of us are happy with the final outcome. We don't feel other acts to be our competitors as we believe we are representing something different in our own way.

What can we expect from your Liverpool performance?

It will be a continuation of what we did at MESC, but even more ambitious. At the moment we are working with our creative director planning each step, designing the stage and learning new dance moves!

What is your Eurovision ambition?

Our Eurovision ambition is to be able to promote our song as much as we can and leave an impact with our performance on the night, which will hopefully lead us to the finals.

And lastly, aside from Eurovision, what other 2023 plans do you have?

To keep on writing new music and perform gigs - it's what we love about music so as long as we can keep on doing that, our minds are at ease.
