10 In 10: Laura Evans-Hill
Laura Evans-Hill, Founder and Director of Nifty Fox Creative, is the latest regional business professional in the hot seat as we give her just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.
1. What does a typical working day for you involve?
My days are so varied, from teaching at universities and mentoring my team to speaking at conferences and live scribing at events.
I split my time between teaching the next generation of researchers and leaders to become impactful visual communicators, and running collaborative design sessions with communities and researchers to co-create products that drive real-world change. We’ve also grown really quickly as a business and team, so part of my time is spent mentoring and coaching my team. And then other days you will find me facilitating discovery sessions with clients to get to the heart of their story, and occasionally wearing pirate hats whilst doing it!
2. What makes your company special?
Specialising in visual storytelling for social good, Nifty Fox helps researchers and public sector leaders translate complex insights into accessible, impactful communications. Billions are invested annually in academic research to solve society’s most pressing challenges, yet researchers struggle to translate their findings into formats that drive real-world change.
We help bridge the gap between academic insight and real-world impact through visual storytelling, animation, live scribing, and co-production. This has led us to work with more than 50 universities internationally, 3,000+ researchers, and 80 public sector organisations - including NATO, the UN, international parliaments, the Ministry of Justice, the UK Government and the NHS. When research reaches the people who need it, systems transform, policies evolve, and lives improve.
As a cause-led business, we’re proud to be involved in helping to make a positive change.
3. Do you have any business rules that you swear by?
Keep it simple: care about your clients, work hard, be kind. If you do good work and the right thing, business will flow from it.
4. Do you dress up or down for work?
Both. When I’m out with clients, teaching or speaking, I’ll dress up. When I’m in the office with the team, I’ll be more casual. Whatever the outfit though, I must have a matching watch and a jazzy shoe – it reminds me not to take myself too seriously!
5. What piece of advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Stop being who you think you should be, and start being who you really are. All the best things in my life have come from showing up as who I truly am, embracing vulnerability and allowing myself to lean into the skills that bring me joy.
As an LGBTQ+ founder operating in a landscape where only 18% of business founders in 2024 were women and even fewer were LGBTQ+ identifying, I made the decision to show up authentically as me and share my experiences to create pathways for others who cannot be "what they cannot see." I wish 18-year-old me could see how far I have come.
6. What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?
The Treehouse Boardgame cafe in Sheffield. What better way to connect with your team, get to know clients and test your strategic brain than fighting to the death in a hotly contested tabletop role playing game! Great food and venue, with an unusual focus for the day.
7. How do you prefer to travel for business?
Definitely the train. It is usually quicker and less stressful than cars, and I’ve met the most interesting people in my carriage, from Dermot O’Leary to long lost school friends!
8. What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?
The Trans Pennine trail with my dog – miles to get lost in. Walking with my ‘Head of Barketing’ Reuben is my zen space, and with the scenery on the trail I can disconnect and relax.
9. Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?
My favourite place is The Bells Kitchen in Silkstone – great steaks, family atmosphere, and close to home for a perfect Friday night treat.
10. What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you’re away?
The people! The community spirit, generosity and humour that starts when you get north of Derby.
