10 In 10: Samantha Overton

Samantha Overton, managing director of Zebra Print Group is the latest regional professional in the hot seat as the p.ublished group of newspapers gives her just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

No two days are ever the same, which is one of the things I love most about my job. I usually start by checking in with the team and catching up on ongoing projects, as we’ve always got something creative on the go. My day can then range from meeting clients to discuss campaign ideas, to reviewing proofs or brainstorming new ways to push print innovation. I like to stay hands-on and make sure everything we produce reflects our values of quality, creativity and care.

What makes your company special?

Zebra Print Group is a true family business with nearly two decades of heritage. My dad founded the company, and I’m proud to continue his legacy with a focus on excellence, innovation and personal service. We’re Yorkshire born and bred, and that comes through in our work ethic - we combine hard graft with warmth and creativity. Whether it’s a small business card run or a full national campaign, every client receives the same attention to detail and passion.

Do you dress up or down for work?

It really depends on the day! If I’m out meeting clients or attending events, I’ll dress up a bit more, but in the office it’s usually smart-casual. Comfort and confidence go hand-in-hand for me - if I feel good, I work better.

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to take up space. I’d tell her that being passionate, driven and a little bit of a perfectionist isn’t a bad thing, it’s what will help you build something you’re proud of. And most importantly, surround yourself with good people; teamwork really is everything.

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

In the past, we’ve held our Christmas team parties at places like the Royal Armouries, Headingley Stadium and Thorpe Park Hotel in Leeds. They’ve all been great fun, each offering a lovely festive atmosphere and a good excuse for the team to relax and celebrate together.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

If it’s within Yorkshire, I love to drive as it gives me a bit of quiet thinking time between meetings. For longer trips, I’ll often hop on the train so I can catch up on emails and prep on-the-go.

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

The Yorkshire coast holds a special place in my heart. I have a lodge on the east coast, and it’s where I go to switch off and spend time with my husband, family and niece. Sea air, fish and chips and a long beach walk are all my idea of heaven.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

Leading on from the last question, I spend a lot of weekends on the East Coast, and that’s usually when I go out for something to eat. My absolute favourite is Sunday lunch at The Seabirds Inn in Flamborough - it’s delicious, hearty and comes with a stunning sea view. The bonus is they do a dairy-free chocolate cake I can actually have - it’s so good and the perfect way to finish off a Sunday!

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you’re away?

The people! There’s a grit and friendliness in Yorkshire folk that you just don’t find everywhere else. I also miss the scenery - from the moors to the coast, it’s such a grounding, beautiful place to come home to.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

Treat people well and do what you say you’ll do. Reputation and relationships are everything in business. I also believe in saying yes to opportunities, even if they scare you a little, as that’s where the growth happens.
