10 In 10: Nick Marsden
Nick Marsden, Senior Director, CBRE’s Rating team is the latest regional professional in the hot seat as the p.ublished group of newspapers gives him just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.
What does a typical working day for you involve?
My day typically starts at 6am, getting my 5-year-old boy ready for 7:30 Breakfast Club and spending time with my 8-week-old daughter before work. A quick train to Leeds and I am in work for 8am, with my all-important coffee.
A typical workday includes; checking in with my team across the North; engaging with colleagues and clients through meetings, as well as responding to emails. As well as managing the Northern Rating business, I have a number of specific projects on behalf of clients seeking to minimise their liability to business rates.
What makes your company special?
Having worked at CBRE for nearly 15 years, it is a great place to work offering great employee benefits, career development, culture, diversity equity and inclusion commitments, as well as employee recognition.
Our people across the North and across CBRE are some of the most passionate and talented individuals I have come across, that truly work together to deliver exceptional advice for clients. Not only that, they are a caring and supportive team that makes for a great working environment.
Do you have any business rules that you swear by?
My fundamental rule is that you should truly commit to the task in hand. You cannot conquer what you are not committed to as without it nothing happens…
Do you dress up or down for work?
Depends on the situation – But, mostly smart casual…so neither up nor down!
What piece of advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Probably the same advice I was given – ‘Do your best ‘Nicholas’ and commit whole heartedly to the task in hand’.
What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?
As Chairman of the Ilkley Beer Festival, I was able to lead a team in delivering £50,000 profit from this year’s event for Charities and local causes. Held in February every year at the Kings Hall & Winter Gardens, it’s a fantastic event and venue that many of my clients attend.
How do you prefer to travel for business?
I get the train every day to work
What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?
Anywhere walking in the Yorkshire Moors, followed by a country pub stop for lunch.
Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire and what dish do you recommend?
You can’t beat a beef sandwich in Sous le Nez in Leeds (with chips and peppercorn sauce)
What do you miss about Yorkshire when you are away?
The people, the countryside
