10 in 10: Adam Whiteley

Adam Whiteley is the Finance Director of Harrogate-based car and van leasing company, Synergy Car Leasing.

He is the latest regional professional in the hot seat as the p.ublished group of newspapers gives him just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

My day starts early as I take the kids to school for breakfast club. From there I head to the office where I will make a coffee and have breakfast. While eating, I typically plan my day before getting into any report writing and meetings. We are lucky where our office is that we have a gym almost next door. At lunch, I will either try to use the gym or go for a walk to have a good break from the computer and refresh myself.

As a management team, we meet most afternoons to discuss what is going on in the business, any challenges that we might be having, how we can help each other overcome them, and celebrate our successes.

What makes your company special?

I have been at Synergy for a year now, and the people here stand out the most. Everyone is so friendly, and everyone helps each other out, no matter what the challenge.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

It isn’t just a business rule, as I try to live by it in all areas of my life, but it is to treat people as you would want to be treated.

Do you dress up or down for work?

Out of preference, I like to dress casually. We tend to dress for the day that you have. So, for example, if you have visitors coming in or you have to go to an event, then it will be more formal. Otherwise, I like a good pair of jeans and a polo shirt.

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

It would be to see more of the world. There is so much to be gained by experiencing and understanding different cultures.

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

I like Coniston Hall because it is away from all the hustle and bustle of the city and has a great range of activities. It’s always a good day out.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

Ideally, I like to travel by car. Yes, it can mean sitting in traffic, but I have spent years at train stations waiting for delayed or cancelled trains. At least when you are driving you can put a podcast or some music on and you are more in control.

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

Well, they say that there is no place like home and that is certainly true for me as it is where I am most relaxed. I have two young daughters who keep me on my toes, so relaxation is at a premium.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

It depends on who I am with. We went to Stuzzi in Harrogate for our last staff party, and I was impressed. It had a great atmosphere, and the arancini balls were fantastic. The Empire Café in Leeds is another favourite, and the Scotts Arms makes great pies.

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you’re away?

I miss most things. Yorkshire has everything. Leeds is vibrant, there is beautiful countryside and coastlines. Everything is here and we are so lucky to live in such a brilliant area.
