10 in 10: Angela Carney

Angela Carney, managing director, Carney Consultancy. She is the latest regional professional in the hot seat as the p.ublished group of newspapers gives her just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

As I work in the world of construction, there is no typical day and, honestly, no two days in any week are the same. The positive is that there is huge variety and I never get bored. My days consist of talking with customers and staff logistics, to make the impossible possible and see who can lend a hand in the latest CSR project, be it with schools, colleges or one of the charities we support.

What makes your company special?

We bring in our consultants and many of our other staff, never having undertaken their roles before, and provide inhouse and external training to develop a fully rounded team member. So, we create very much a team ethos, where everybody looks out for each other and lends a hand. We enjoy lots of social events together which always helps to build comradery.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

We never say we can’t help. If we can’t do something, we find someone who can.

People buy from people, so it’s about being friendly and kind, as people remember how you made them feel.
Nothing is impossible, there’s always a way.

We always do what we say we are going to do, when we say we will do it. Under promise and over deliver.

Do you dress up or down for work?

We all have branded polo shirts, jumpers etc but otherwise people wear jeans and trousers. We don’t insist on people wearing the same outfits, they have their own individual styles.

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Don’t take it so seriously, it’s a journey and the destination is forever changing. Really celebrate your wins and just learn from your mistakes. Everything happens for a reason and doors close but normally it’s for a reason, as what’s next is even better!

How do you prefer to travel for business?

Definitely by train! It’s so much more relaxing than driving and you can work and get more done.

What’s your favourite place in the North East to relax?

Plessey Woods is my number one place to visit in the North East. As a family, we spent so much time there when the children were young and we all still love going back now with our dogs. Plus, they have a dog bath, which is essential if you have labradors!

Where is your favourite place to eat in the North East and what dish do you recommend?

Soho Korean & Japanese street food. I love the food and have tried several dishes, my favourite being the stir fry noodles with chicken katsu. It’s divine.

What's your favourite North East venue for an event or team away day?

I always enjoy the many events at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead. The venue is great, it is spacious and the awards dinner always goes down well with our team.

What do you miss most about the North East when you’re away?

Everyone says it but it’s the people that make the North East so great. No matter where you go in the world you normally find someone from the North East and they are always so friendly and welcoming.
